THIS YEAR GOT OFF TO AN
AWARD-WINNING START IN THE
MUSIC DEPARTMENT, WITH BOTH
CAMBIATA CHOIR AND CAPPELLA
LUMINA WINNING AWARDS
IN THE SUFFOLK FESTIVAL OF
PERFORMING ARTS.
For the second year running our chamber
choir (Cappella Lumina) won the under 20s
Choral Championship Cup, after a well
fought battle with the other competitors.
Both choirs also performed in ‘Music For
Youth’ at the City of Birmingham Symphony
Orchestra Hall in Birmingham later in the
year, receiving excellent feedback from the
festival’s music mentors.
THE AUTUMN
CONCERT
The Autumn Concert gave all of the
Senior School ensembles the opportunity
to perform after only a few weeks of
rehearsals. We heard stirring performances
from Orchestra, Concert Band, Big Band,
Percussion Ensemble, Cambiata Choir,
Cappella Lumina and our largest choir,
Cantus. The Biennial Carol Service at St
Edmundsbury Cathedral brought the magic
and wonder of Christmas to the Senior
School. Christina Johnston’s performances
of ‘Abigail’s Song’ by Murray Gold and
Rombi’s ‘Ave Maria’ were breathtaking, and
the cathedral was filled with joyful festive
singing from both choir and congregation.

THE SCHOLARS’
CONCERT
The Scholars’ Concert was, once again,
an evening of quality music, delivered
by our outstanding Music Scholars. The
standard of playing was extremely high
both in technical and musical terms, and
this was a celebration of the stretch of
our scholars’ programme. We are also
keen to further develop our students by
encouraging membership of elite music
ensembles. This year we are proud to have
members of National Youth Choir, National
Youth Jazz Ensemble, National Percussion
Orchestra and Aldeburgh Young Musicians
amongst our scholars. Their leadership
and commitment is infectious, and the
positive effect on other students cannot be
underestimated.
CABARET
Cabaret was all about Jazz this year. The
range of styles and genres ensured that
the audience were kept on their toes for
the whole evening. A highlight was Marty
Gionis’s interpretation of jazz standard
‘All of Me’ played all by himself. Marty
recorded and videoed himself playing a full
big band arrangement, culminating in him
playing the live solo lines on trombone and
trumpet (and trumpets at one point!) along
with the filmed backing. Sensational!
OUR SUMMER
CONCERT
The summer term gave us more
opportunities for soloists and ensembles.
Our Summer Concert was held in St
Michael’s Church. Cantus sang an
exceptional arrangement of ‘The Battle of
Jericho’ by Moses Hogan, and ‘Underneath
the Stars’ arranged by Voces8 specially for
Mr Taylor; it summed up his energy and
faith and was a touching tribute.
Music ReView ended the year with a bang;
great fun was had by performers and a
packed audience, and it was a chance
for bands and soloists to perform in the
sunshine against our incredible backdrop of
Framlingham Castle.
As well as these performances, we have
had numerous scholars’ workshops, concert
trips and professional recitals. ABRSM and
Trinity graded exams continue to be an area
of superb achievement, with the number of
high grades increasing, year on year.
