At the end of every academic year the
pupils in Pre-Prep take part in a Celebration
Assembly. It’s one of the magical moments
for pupils, parents and teachers as it
enables us all to see how far our youngest
children have developed from the start of
school to the end of Key Stage 1. Each
year group gives a presentation based
on the favourite topic they have explored
during the year. During our last assembly a
theme emerged, that of the natural world.
The Early Years’ children had enjoyed
exploring Under the Sea and finding out all
about the fantastic creatures that inhabit
that watery world. Year 1 had listened
to the Carnival of the Animals and each
child spoke about an animal they had
found out about - the colourful masks
were a great clue to each child’s favourite
animal. As always, the Year 2 pupils were
able to show the teachers and parents
just how much the confidence of age and
experience meant they could put on a really
engaging performance. This year it was a
dramatisation of ‘The Kapok Tree’. Year
2 had spent a term finding out about the
72
rainforest and it had really sparked both
their imaginations and their understanding
of the fragility of the world we live in.
The performance highlighted the need to
save the rainforest for everyone’s benefit
and Year 2 had become so committed
to the need to save our rainforests that
they decided to raise money for a charity
supporting this aim by designing badges
and selling them in school. They raised £75
for The World Land Trust, a charity based
in Halesworth, who came to school to be
presented with the cheque and to help
the children learn more about the world’s
endangered environments. The assembly
showcased not just the knowledge children
acquire during the school year but how
that knowledge is built on year on year. It
also displayed the children’s speaking and
listening skills and their growing confidence
in expressing their ideas and opinions
and their willingness to take action and
participate in the wider world.
