THIS IS MY LAST OPPORTUNITY TO
SUMMARISE THE MATHS YEAR AS I MOVE
TO PASTURES NEW IN SEPTEMBER AFTER
17 YEARS IN THE MATHS DEPARTMENT.
I want to tell you about the learning
highlights that have happened in
Maths lessons this year that cannot be
captured in short term test results.
Our pupils have been inquisitive and
independent - Maths lessons begin with
a task to tackle without being spoonfed. How can a doughnut be cut into 8
equal parts in 3 cuts? These warm up
tasks enable pupils to engage, think, try
different strategies and ask ‘What If?’
Pupils are brave - when given the option
to choose where to start their work
today from a menu of hard, very hard
or almost impossible - Framlingham
College Prep School pupils delight me
with their gutsy attitude to challenge.
Borne out by another year of excellent
National Maths Challenge competition
results – 5 Primary and 25 Junior
certificates and an unprecedented
5 pupils through to the Kangaroo
Extension Paper.
Maths at Framlingham College Prep
School builds resilience - especially for
pupils who struggle in maths exams.
Where do you go from a dispiriting E
grade in your January C.E. mocks?
Thanks to their persevering attitude,
the pupils here pick themselves up,
work hard and make super-satisfying
progress: 9A*, 10A, 3B, 12C, 12Ds in
the June C.E. examinations.
Finally, in Maths lessons pupils are
imaginative and innovative, often
finding routes to solve problems that
require collaboration, conversations to
convince and the admission of error
without shame. These are the long-term
results embedded in Maths learners at
the Prep School. What an honour it has
been to lead this fabulous department.
Oh - the doughnut? I’m not telling…
you’ll have to persevere!
