THERE HAVE BEEN MANY EXCITING
AND NOTABLE EVENTS THIS YEAR
FOR THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT.
The Science Common Entrance results were
once again excellent with 43% of pupils in
Year 8 achieving A*, A and B grades.
Jonty Ward in Year 8 demonstrated truly
significant progress over the two year CE
course and attained one of the highest
overall marks in the 13+CE examination.
As a result of his tremendous hard work
Jonty was awarded the GH Simpson
Science Prize.
Then, of course, there was Science Week
and it proved to be a roaring success. All

pupils from Nursery through to Year 7 took
part in a variety of events including: visits
to the Sea-Life Centre to learn about life
underwater; Dinosaur Land to discover
the giants that once roamed the earth;
Colchester Zoo to study conservation in
action; Pensthorpe Natural Park to study
the importance of pollinators and the
Cambridge Zoology Museum to study
evolution. Year 7 pupils travelled far and
wide, visiting the SUEZ recycling plant at
Great Blakenham and taking their first
indoor skydive at i-FLY. Other highlights
were the Year 5 trip to the Kerr’s farm
and visits from Lion Learners, Becky Kitter
- Balloon Science and Scott Marley - an
astrophysicist from the Science Theatre
company.
Various talks also took place.
There was a bee talk from Mr Carman,
a beach safety talk by the RNLI and an
Animal Aid speaker discussed various
animal welfare issues. Pupils also undertook
K’NEX challenges, such as towers, bridges
and moon buggy construction. There
were rivers studied, owl pellets dissected,
Alka-Seltzer and Mentos rockets set off,
Incredible Hulk hands made, marble
runs battled out and multi-coloured slime
concocted.
Year 6 also had a fantastic morning at
The Senior School, hosted by members of
the College’s Science department, where
various activities from rockets to butter, to
bath bombs and collapsing cola cans were
undertaken. Thank you to everyone who
made Science Week so very memorable for
staff and pupils alike.
