FOREST
SCHOOL
This year saw our Forest School programme
rolled out to include pupils from Year
1 through to Year 6. Forest School is
a holistic, child-led and multi-sensory
approach to self-development and skill
development. Weekly Forest School
sessions are run in ‘The Outback’, a perfect
wooded area of the grounds, that runs
alongside the River Deben. This area has a
purpose built outdoor canopy, fire-pit and
fire circle.
Each of the sessions were tailored to
meet individual learners’ needs and the
children develop confidence and selfesteem through play and exploration. We
used tools such as saws, knives and hand
drills; we made shelters from dead wood
and tarpaulins; learned the art of lighting
fires; decorated bunting; explored during
scavenger hunts; got a little wet during
pond dipping; played nature and parachute
games; made environmental art inspired
by Andy Goldsworthy and cooked s’mores
and pancakes over the open campfire.
The sessions have been incredibly popular
and have enabled us all to re-connect with
nature.
We are really looking forward to the next
academic year to see what nature will teach
us.
