MODERN LANGUAGES
European Languages Day
This academic year the Modern Language
Department had the pleasure of welcoming
four new members of staff: Juan Sedeno
joined the Department as Head of Spanish
and has been absolutely phenomenal in
helping lead the Modern Languages this
academic year. Armelle Leost joined us
as a French and Spanish addition and
her creative flair and savoir-faire in the
classroom has been an inspiration to us
all. Tereza Shopova joined as our Spanish
assistant and she has been an absolute ray
of sunshine. Her energy and enthusiasm,
both in and out of language classrooms,
has brought a great deal of pleasure to
our language students. Gaétan Robin
joined us as our French assistant and
quickly established himself as a crucial and
valuable member of the Department. He
was Mr Efficiency personified as well as
being most approachable and generous
with his time. The students gained a great
deal from his lessons.
Besides the usual business of preparing
our students for the very challenging
GCSE and A levels exams, we had a
number of special days: a Spanish Tapas
evening in September with our Spanish
Sixth Formers; Churros making with
Year 10 groups; the European Day of
Languages in the Prep School where our
senior students introduced language and
culture from their own countries; we held
a languages evening for Year 9 students;
the first exchange with the “Virgen de
Europa School” and the “Have your say”
competition. Our Year 10 students also
took part in the “Spanish creative writing
competition” – Oxford University – a great
experience for our best creative writers.
Annabel Sheppard and Francisca Dos Santos Henriques placed 2nd and Henry Moore and Finlay Bloore in ‘Have your Say’
