THE ACADEMIC YEAR
2018-2019 SAW THE
DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY
DEPARTMENT AGAIN
GROW IN NUMBER WITH
ITS LARGEST COHORT OF
GCSE AND SIXTH FORM
STUDENTS YET.
In Year 11, students undertaking
their IGCSE completed a range of
coursework projects with the usual
quality of design and manufacture that
the department has become renowned
for. Most pleasingly, almost one in three
(32%) students achieved a grade 7 or
better.
In the Sixth Form, undertaking the PreU
Art & Design course, Year 12 students
followed in the footsteps of their
predecessors by pushing the boundaries
of design and manufacturing. Students
experimented with not just traditional
materials and processes, but also
more contemporary ideas, most
notably combining coloured resins
and hardwood to good effect. Year 13
students chose a wide range of project
briefs from chairs to desks, and sliding
doors to model trams. In addition to
their project work, they also completed
well researched Critical Studies,
exploring design-related questions such
as ‘Are designers to blame for plastic
pollution?’ and ‘How does currency
design reflect a nation’s culture?’.

The highlight of the year was, quite
predictably, the Design Exhibition in
Paul’s Court, which again showcased
the creativity and ingenuity of students’
work. This year, students took ownership
of presenting their displays and the
results were comparable to degreelevel exhibitions at leading UK creative
Universities.
