UNMAN, WITTERING
AND ZIGO
This Summer our two plays: ‘Unman,
Wittering and Zigo’ by Giles Cooper and
‘DNA’ by Dennis Kelly, showcased two
schools. The nightmarish public school of
Chantry where students manipulate the
system resulting in murder and mayhem
and in the latter, the environs of a large
secondary school where students create
their own dysfunctional hierarchies that
result in horrifying outcomes. Both plays
have the theme of escalation in common
where things get horribly out of hand when
weak people (students and adults in both
the communities) turn a deliberate blind
eye to what is happening or are intimidated
into silence. The evening gave the audience
Lord of the Flies with lashings of added
horror alongside moments of high comedy.
Both evenings were well-attended, and
deservedly so, with many fine performances
from our talented Year 9 and 10 pupils.
Congratulations to Robert Monaghan on
his first outing as director with ‘Unman,
Wittering and Zigo’. He dealt with a
large cast and a stage requiring multiple
locations on several levels and a monster
of a script and did a very good job. ‘DNA’
is the current Year 10 GCSE study play and
this was a great opportunity for them to
explore it in performance.
