In Search of Monster Carp
32lb Boggle Eyed Common from Cotton.
home, I might as well have a go at it,
because I could fish it properly. The
good thing about Cotton is that it’s
predominantly a water where you can
get a bite any time. There is no set
pattern; it’s not particularly a night
water, and it’s not particularly a day
water. There are a number of good
fish in there as well – in six acres
you’re probably looking at around
about ten fish over 30lb, so they’re a
good size, and proper old English carp
as well, topped by the common,
which was about 47lb the last time it
got caught, so it’s one of the biggest
commons in the country now.
I concentrated on there, baiting up
with good quality bait again as well
as quite a few particles, as they work
quite well on there as well. By doing
before work sessions or evening sessions, I managed to catch most of the
fish in there. The biggest one I caught
is a fish by the name of Fang, and the
heaviest I had it at was about 32lb,
but I think it has been as big as 3435lb. I also caught the original fish
that we call Yellow Belly, which is a
really old original fish, but unfortunately the one that still eludes me is
the common, and I still hope to catch
it one day. One thing I have made my
mind up on though, is that I would
like to catch that fish by stalking, as I
have been close to it a number of
times. I know it’s nice to just cast out
in the lake, but I don’t think there is
anything better than seeing your target fish pick up your hookbait and nail
it, so that’s the little ambition I have
still got left.
