A Question of Bait
and a mate of mine was having it off.
His tally came to five in the end – a
40lb mirror, a 39lb common, a 32lb
mirror, a 29 and a 23. Basically a good
season’s worth of fish from the venue.
With his permission I dropped into a
swim 30yds to his left as the carp
swims, and it’s ‘black’ with fish. There
were at least ten fish drifting to and
fro right in close, so it was eyeball to
eyeball stuff – a 24 carat opportunity.
I picked my moment, and I put a rig
with a balanced hookbait, a handful of
hemp, chops and a little corn right on
the edge of some pads in about 18ins
of water to my right, and the same in
a tiny hole in the weed straight out in
front, about 5yds out. The X-Line was
festooned with putty; it was tightened into the weed, and then everything was slackened right off with
less than an inch of tip hanging over
the sleeper at the front of the swim –
cushty – it was just a matter of time,
surely!
Wrong, I watched a known midforty and several other good fish
ignore my ‘perfect’ traps all day; they
had a good look, but I failed to secure
a bite, I had to sit and there and get a
full interrogation, watching them
swim up to the sleeper in the front of
the swim looking for my lines. One
even swam over the lines, then swam
backwards with its tail touching the
bottom and its pecs out until it picked
up a line, and then departed. They
spent the day it seemed letting me
know I was there. 30yds to my right,
my mate Craig had tails waving at
him all day – go figure, as they say
across the pond, I didn’t get it right on
the day, and I had to be off by 9pm. I
popped back the following morning,
and my bait was gone.
Unlucky? No – I didn’t get it right.
Wrong bait? On the face of it, no;
Craig and I were using identical baits
and applying it in exactly the same
way. Am I beating myself up? No, in
my mental ‘debrief’ after that session
I could accept that doing the same
thing didn’t pay off, and a single hookbait hovering over the weed may
have been the answer, or a single surface bait like floating crust may also
have been the answer.
I didn’t make any allowances for it
taking a little more time to develop
their confidence, and my expectations
of the approach I’d adopted for a day
session had been way too high. All

this would have been irrelevant if I’d
hooked one though, wouldn’t it? Then
I’d be a right clever so-and-so, wouldn’t I?
There is very often a fine line
between success and failure, and it’s
rarely down to the effectiveness of
any one bait, whatever that may be;
it’s how it’s applied to each unique
angling circumstance.
To be consistently successful
requires a lot of flexibility at times,
and the anglers who are consistently
successful have a myriad of tactics at
their disposal, and know when to
apply them. I can use my bait with
utter confidence all year round, and
tend to ignore short term ‘trends’. In
answer to your question, I would
advise you to maintain flexibility in
your approach, and not blindly go
where everyone else has gone
already. I haven’t got the photos back
from Craig yet, but have a look at
what one of my other mates, Scott,
caught after getting it right in the
same week on the same venue ¬– the
