round to have a chat with us. He was
fishing on the other side of the canal,
and he sat there cross-legged on the
floor, and all he had on was a boiler
suit, a funny old jumper underneath it,
and a woolly hat, and there was Bruce
and me done up like we were ready to
go to the North Pole. We were cold,
but he was sat there for hours on the
floor; it was incredible. He’s just a
strange egg, but a very good fisherman. He was actually fishing a swim
called the Boss, which is like a bush in
Dutch, so they called it the Boss
swim. He was fishing there for a fish
called the Long’un and this fish is a
long one; it’s well over 3ft 6ins long, a
big, scaly mirror. Alijn had some big
fish out of that canal, and he said that
if he were going to catch it, it would
be from the Boss, and he did; he
caught it from the Boss – unbelievable.
When you walk up and down these
canals, they are all so much the same,
and why fish hang in certain areas I
don’t really know. I mean I can understand them getting up by the locks
and places like that, and they’re the
places I used to like to fish in the summer because they are letting the

boats through. Also we used to get
onto the lock itself, open up the lock
gates, let the German barges through,
and then copped the money off them
– good fun, and yeah, very nice fishing
over there.
I’m telling you this because people
know me as a Savay fisherman, but
I’ve been to France, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Canada and loads of places
abroad. That’s one type of fishing, but
over here is the real thing. Actually
this season, I went over to Luke Moffatt’s water in France where the
record comes from. I was over there
with Keith Wesley and his boy Jordan,
Frank the Fireman and Big Roger
from Savay, and Lou. Lou and I were
going to fish on the main lake there
with Jordan and Keith, and Frank the
Fireman and Big Roger were fishing
on the small lake. I think they paid
about £100 or something like that,
and there were supposed to be fish in
there up to 50lb. They caught plenty
of fish, but the big lake was what we
were interested in, because of the
record fish being in there. It would
have been nice just to see it, and
that’s really why I went over there,
just to see it. Keith had actually
caught it the year before, oh no, two
years prior to that – Bob Baker had
caught it the year before that – it was
a big, big fish.
Anyway, we had a nice week’s fish-
ing; Jordan caught the biggest fish at
56lb 8oz I think it was. He also had
another 50 and a couple of 40’s; he did
really well. Keith did well too; he had
several 40’s, and all in all we had a
really good trip. I also had a personal
best of 56lb, and I had a 40lb 2oz I
think it was, and two mid-30’s, so all
in all we had a really good shot. But
the thing was really was to go and see
that big fish. I mean, I weighed it, and
picking it out of the water, seeing it in
the weigh net and putting it up on the
scales was amazing – this fish was
something special. Luke Moffatt, the
guy who runs the place, is very, very
particular with his fish, and I don’t
blame him. I suppose that’s how
you’ve got to be if you’ve got a business where you’ve got fish like that.
He’s got a lake there of 27 acres, and
he’s got a big head of fish in there,
probably 250 at present. The big fish
that Jordan caught is now 91lb, and
there’s also another one in there
called the Chocolate Fish, which has
been out at 80lb-odd, and there are a
good few 50’s and 40’s in there; I
mean, it is a big fish water. It was a
really good session, but I’m getting on
a bit in years now, and for me to see a
fish like that on the bank was just
mind-blowing. I couldn’t believe it; it
was something else without a doubt.
So, going back to modern-day
Savay – it’s about back to where it
was in the early 80’s with regards
how many you’re going to catch in a
season. Obviously the fish that are
caught now are a lot bigger, but I
think it’s all come full circle there.

fish it hard, and when I say that, I
