Let the Summer Commence

o, the summer arrived,
briefly but brilliantly, and
for a week or so we had
soaring temperatures
and spawning carp. As
usual, this coincided
with June 16th and although that
date has less significance nowadays,
it’s still surprising how close to it the
carp seem to choose to spawn. What
with all this talk of global warming, I
would have thought they would be
beginning their annual ritual around
February – maybe I got it wrong. But,
as always at that time of year, there
are two sides to that story, and they
are epitomised by two fish this year.

The Burghfield Common was last
caught, last year, at 57lb. The Amphibian, from Manor, has been that weight
for its last few captures, this year and
last, but unfortunately only one has
survived the rigours of this year’s
spawning frenzy.
Last Saturday I heard that Terry
Hearn had, once again, been successful in his quest for his target fish when
he landed the Burghfield Common at
47lb. This was a surprising weight,
