caseinate, semolina, ground rice, that
type of thing. There were nowhere
near the amount of flavours and additives around. Kevin Nash actually was
one of the first to have a range of
flavours, and they were called Karp
Krave, all in glass bottles, and Alan
Brown sold these at the Carp Cellar in
Watford. Richworth was in its infancy,
and two regular carp anglers who
used the shop and also fished Savay
in the early days, Malcolm Winkworth
and Clive Dietrich, came up with the
first commercial frozen boilies.
But once again I’m jumping the
gun a little bit here, so let’s go back to
those early days of Stanborough.
Once I got my ticket back after my
night fishing exploits, I was banned
for a season, but got my ticket back
the next year and went on to catch
hundreds of carp from Stanborough,
including the odd 20lb’er. I became
more friendly with Len Gurd who
would kindly take me to the BCSG
meetings that were being held
around the country. Len would hold
the BCSG meetings in Dunstable, and
Duncan Kay would hold the BCSG
meetings in Northants, and Len asked
me if I would like to run the recently
formed Carp Anglers Association,
CAA, for Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire,
Buckinghamshire and Oxford, which I
loved to do. On a monthly basis I
would hire a hall in Dunstable, write a
letter to about 200-300 members in
that area and invite them along to
watch a slide show and be generally
entertained by speakers, along with a
tackle stand and bait stand. There
were very few people that had tackle
and bait stands at the time, but Geoff
Kemp was a young lad who had just
started up selling bait, and another
young lad who had just started up
selling tackle was Kevin Nash, and
both of these guys would turn up in
their little vans. They had nobody
working for them at all; they were
one-man bands and put on a little display of their wares.
At the time, Kevin only sold his
flavours, a carp sack, a weigh sling
and maybe a little carryall or something, but very, very little, and Jeff had
a range of powders and flavours. I
would invite these guys regularly to
come along and watch the slide
shows of the time. These were put on
by anglers such as John Baker, Kevin
Maddocks, and Alan Downey. Now
there’s a name from the past, Alan
Downey, you never hear about him
any more. He was a very good and
eccentric angler who fished Wormleybury and places around the Hertford
area, Broxbourne etc, and he had a
f a n t a s t i c s l i d e s h o w, w h i c h w e
watched every year. Bruce Ashby had
made a movie about catching a couple of 30lb carp with a colleague of
his, Johnson, and I saw the movie on
a couple of occasions in those early
days, on 8mm film reel, maybe in the
early 70’s. It was actually at one of
these BCSG meetings, after having
three or four pints of beer, that I was
stopped by the police on the way
home, breathalysed, and lost my
licence for a year. I know that that
was 1973, so that’s when I saw
Bruce’s film that particular night.
What a nightmare.
The BCSG would also have an
annual conference, which was held
either at Hatfield Polytechnic or the
London School of Economics if my
memory serves me right, and the
great anglers of the day: Bob Morris,
Jack Simpson, and Kevin again, would
all put on slide shows and talks. It
was an amazing time because this
