Third place is win in our ‘tired’ eyes
Upon returning from Hungary, we had less than 36 hours at home to
prep and spin on our heels to reload the van and off for another long
drive, this time only to Lincolnshire for The Ladies British Carp Cup
Singles.
Arriving Thursday evening at Old Mill Lakes, I was hit head on
with a cold, probably through exhaustion, so that left Debbie and our
runner Ian to chat while I collapsed. Early morning Friday, I was
feeling rough and was wondering how I could survive the weekend,
let alone fish to my best.
Debbie and Ian tried to kickstart my competitive fighting spirit
into life, and once the draw had taken place, off we went to our
swims. I was fuelled on cold remedies that a few kind competitors
had given me. Setting up was a real struggle, but rather than let it
win me over, I fought on and started fishing when the hooter sounded
at midday. It was hard fishing for everyone; the fish were just not
feeding, and it became apparent by the end of the competition they
were getting ready to spawn.
Debbie got off the mark and onto the scoreboard, landing two fish
weighting a total weight of 3lb 7oz. The fish really only had two
short, sharp feeding spells, which rippled around the lake. I had two
fish Saturday afternoon, weighing a total of 27lb 12oz that jumped
me into second place, and then nothing really changed on the score
board until the second feeding spell Sunday morning. A few fish
were caught around the lake, and I moved into third
place. We used Hooked On Baits Hemp and Blitz in
small Castaway PVA HQ stockings within our baited
area. RidgeMonkey soft braid camo hooklink and pin
sharp RM hooks are winning combinations in any
circumstances.
It was a tough match all weekend, hard fishing made
worse by me feeling so rough. But to still finish on a
podium place feeling the way I did and not fishing
effectively at all for the first 24 hours of the 48-hour
match, I was more than pleased with the result. Debbie
and I were disappointed that the two fish Debbie
caught were so small, as it could have been a different
story had they been the size of the two fish that won
the competition, but that’s how things go sometimes.
It keeps us coming back for more.
