Off With a Bang
ituated in rural Staffordshire near the tiny hamlet of Eccleshall, Baden
Hall fisheries is quickly
gaining a reputation as
one of the leading specimen big fish day ticket waters in the
area, attracting anglers from all over
the Northwest and Midlands. Baden
Hall has a number of lakes on site, but
it’s their Quarry or Specimen Lake
that’s of particular interest to carp
and pike anglers alike, as it holds both
large pike and some stunning looking
pure English mirror and common carp
to over 37lb. The idea of a couple of
nights on Baden Hall’s Specimen
Lake seemed an excellent idea to me,
and with the children’s holidays in full
swing a little piece and quiet seemed
the ideal tonic. One or two close
friends had fished the water over the
last 12 months or so, and to be honest
I was suitably impressed with what
I’d heard about the venue and seen
from their photos.

mons and chunky dark-skinned mirrors swam in the depths of this lake,
and like any carp angler I really relished the idea of pitting my skills
against some of these gorgeous looking creatures. Having spoken to
Jamie he kindly invited me up for a
couple of nights fishing, so I quickly
made arrangements for a midweek
visit, to hopefully try and avoid the
crowds of weekend anglers and obvi-
ously to give myself a better chance
of looking at a few swims in order to
get a clearer picture of the venue as
quickly as possible.
I arrived a couple of days later at
the allocated time of 12 noon and
after a quick chat with Jacquie in the
shop, I made my way over to the
Quarry Lake to try and locate a few
carp. There were a couple of anglers
already fishing, and after a couple of
