A Tale of Two Records Canal Carping
year, I have joined two away syndicates, and a lot of my canal fishing
has been out on the cut. I still do a far
bit at the mooring, but only short sessions. Also, I have fallen in love with
Stuart Gillham’s lake in Thailand,
which I go to for a few weeks in the
winter. During these last five years I
have been fortunate enough to bank
the big fully scaled from the K and A
on three more occasions. I hope you
will appreciate that I would rather not
divulge the exact locations, as they
are hardly fished, and I still fish them
myself.
The first capture of her at over the
magical forty was the 29th February
2012 at 41lb. I had been baiting
steadily with 18mm Cell for several
weeks and was experimenting with
rock salt, which I also introduced with
the Cell. The weather had improved
so I decided on a two-night session. I
set up late afternoon using double
18mm Cell with a third 15mm pop-up
to cap it off. These were cast out with
a PVA bag of rock salt and a dozen or
so baits around each rod. It turned out
to be one of my best K and A sessions
to date. The night produced two high
double commons and one lost. Just
prior to first light, I had a steady take,
and I was hanging on to what I knew
was a big fish that fought slow and
hard for what seemed ages before
showing itself to be the big fully
scaled again. As I lifted the net, I
knew it was bigger and was not surprised when it hit the 41lb mark,
another canal PB. It looked absolutely
huge. I got her safely in the sack and
rang my mate Charlie to do the photographs. About 15 minutes later,
before he arrived, another rod shot off
(Top) The latest capture of the big
fully at 47lb 2oz 20th June 2014. Have I
caught her too many times?
(Left) Propeller damage healed, but
down to 28lb 8oz, July 2014.
