Grand Finale

pussy, but after a few more long runs
I managed to gain some line on it, and
when it first rolled I was surprised to
see it was a common. After a proper
scrap close in it finally succumbed to
my waiting net, and thank god for
that; it was hard work. It turned out to
be a pristine spawned-out common of
29lb 14oz.
I got that one back, got the rod
back onto spot, and it was away
again. It was 4am by now; I hadn’t
been to sleep since the last fish and
here I go again. I must say that whilst
I was having this run of good fortune
or whatever you want to call it, everybody else was struggling big style.
Anyway, this time it was another
common, yet again well spawned out
at 26lb 10oz. It’s good to see them all
spawned out really, at least you know

it’s just packed all the time! I got all
the rods in position, bait out etc, and
bivvy up, and was having the first
brew of the session when the middle
rod on the main baited patch was
away. I had it on for about 30 seconds
when the hook pulled, and the same
happened with the next six fish! Now
I hadn’t changed anything from my
previous trip – same rigs and baits,
etc. At 4am I had another screaming
take, and after another manic fight
landed another catfish of 42lbs. Now
don’t get me wrong, these are big fish,
but they are not what I’m here for!
At 11.45am I had a 27lb 12oz linear,
