Coombe Lake Fishery
oombe Lake Fishery is a
beautiful and intimate little
water, inset into the peaceful
countryside of Hampshire, near
Romsey. The fishery is under the
brilliant management of Jonathan
Pottenger, who has been living and
working on his dream for the last few
years, investing his time and money
into this fishery, and you really can see
the vision he has had for Coombe
taking shape, and it’s easy to see the
effort that has been put into the fishery.
When he initially took over the fishery a
few years ago, he knew it was in dire
need of help and restoration, with
otters destroying the original stock and
a silt buildup being a massive problem,
with areas only a foot or so deep…
From here the hard work began. He
purposely drained the lake, removing
only a handful of fish left and began
digging and removing the unwanted
silt bed, so gaining back much of the
lake’s original depth. Also on top of this,
and an unrelenting list of things to do,
he erected an electrified otter fence
around the whole complex to protect
his new stock of carp before he
introduced them into the lake.
Unfortunately for any lake within a
few miles or so of the rivers, this has
become an ever increasing necessity,
and without it, they run the risk of
losing many carp to these predatory
animals. Jonathan has since installed
two shingled swim areas for pitching
bivvies and created hardened gravel
paths around the lake. There is still work
to be carried out before he is happy
with what he has, but mainly work on
the paths around the lake, as they can
become muddy with heavy rain. When
Jonathan took charge of the fishery, it
was only occupied by one carp and one
bream that had been spared by the
otters. Since then, Jonathan has
restocked the entire lake with only carp
– 75 fish of various sizes and strains
coming from various fish breeders
around the country. Since the first
