Arnaut Dere Lake
8114 Draganovo, Bulgaria
2
017 was my first experience of
Bulgaria from a short seven-day
holiday with my girlfriend, and I was
luckily allowed a brief 48-hour carp fishing
session while there. I found a beautiful
lake in the hills of Bulgaria’s Arnaut Dere
dam where we met a lovely couple, Stefan
and Jenya, who truly put all their efforts
into helping me with my angling and
making my trip a successful one. Anything
else I required they had: fishing tackle,
bait boat hire, bait and advice, and they
ran trips to the local shops and made
some great home-cooked meals. I now
class them as very good friends and the
most helpful fishery managers I’ve ever
met. Also, there was the great local
fisherman who I became good mates with
as well.
I was made to feel very welcome during
my Bulgarian quest, meeting some truly
great fishermen and they were all very
friendly, but one true gent I remember
the most from anglers on the bank was
Svet Stoev, and I was lucky enough to see
my first 50lb-plus carp to a very good
angler on the bank on my first trip and
again on my second trip with a gent called
Martin Samuilov – all great anglers and so
many big fish.
Well, I quickly found my bearings and
set out to catch my first Bulgarian carp,
and I wasn’t disappointed. Within the first
24 hours, I had landed a stunning 39lb
common, the biggest fish I had ever seen
– a very proud moment for me and a new
European PB. I also caught a few high
doubles and had the best fishing trip to a
new venue I’ve ever had. After leaving
Bulgaria, I couldn’t stay away. I was soon
on my way back within as little as five
weeks, and I was back on the dam for a
five-day fishing session.
To say it was good is truly an
understatement with a total of 27 fish
with six sturgeon ranging in size from 5lb
to 9lb and also 20 carp from low to high
doubles: one 22lb-plus, three at 36lb, one
at 39lb and a staggering 41lb carp, which
has now beaten my original Euro PB, and
also a truly amazing achievement in
actually catching the same fish I caught on
my previous trip, which was the 39lb
common, now a pound heavier in just five
weeks. The fishery has a huge head of big
carp and is such an approachable venue
with a maximum of nine anglers with five
swims fished from an island, inside an
open air apartment swim, and three huts
with balconies with viewing points and a
bivvy swim.
Also with swims ranging in distance to
suit any angler, it’s all set in truly tranquil
surroundings with the outstanding site
staff free to help at a moment’s notice. I
will be booking every year, and so many
thanks to Stephan and Jenya… So all you
UK and European carp anglers, you must
get booked on for a truly great Bulgarian
carp experience on the beautiful Arnaut
Dere dam – it is truly a bucket list venue.
