Big Carp Waters
being a male fish, it doesn’t fluctuate
too much in weight, and in recent
seasons has been between 39-43lb.
The size of fins on this carp have to be
seen to be believed; its pecs roll round
they are so big, and with its huge paddle of a tail its easy to see where it
gets its impressive fighting power
and speed from – unstoppable on the
take and initial run! Another fish that
once topped 40lb is the Silt Pit Fish.
Ev caught Silty at over 40 many years
ago, but it was generally mid thirty. I
caught it at 34lbs back in May ‘08 and
the last time it was out was that
autumn at 38lb-plus. Although never
found dead, it now looks likely the Silt
Pit’s gone, as it hasn’t been seen for
definite in the last couple of years.
Broken Rib, or as it used to be
known, Colin’s Fish, has all the potential of going forty, and with this one a
rare visitor to the bank – once a year
or sometimes every other year – I was
pleased to get this one under my belt
early, catching it at 37lb 3oz off Motor-
way Point on my 90-degree pop-up
rig over 50 KG1 18mm boilies.
Another rarely caught one, and a
cracker at that, which I caught twice
in a six-week period on the same rig
and bait, was the Pearly Linear. Having not been out for over two years,
we all hoped it might go forty, but I
wasn’t complaining at 38lb 2oz and
38lb 6oz.
Talking of rare ones, and one I
didn’t catch in my time on this lake
was the Big common, Nathan’s. This
one seems to spend a lot of its time up
the workings end, and as the Brute
had no real form of getting caught
from that end, I concentrated my
efforts almost exclusively away from
the top end. Nathan’s very few recent
captures are around the 36/38 mark.
Another fish usually around this
weight, but with quite big fluctuations at different times of year as she’s
a female, and that also likes the top
end a fair bit, is the Croptail Linear. As
the name suggests its a cracking big
linear with unfortunately a chunk of
its tail missing. This one, unlike most
of the Pinge mirrors, does very little
