A Tale of Two Sessions
them in my life! Safe in the confines of
my bivvy away from the little vampires I sorted my kit, got a brew on
and looked up the footy score. England had just lost on penalties after a
nil-nil score – it was a good move
missing the football and going fishing!
At around three in the morning as
the sky was turning blue on the eastern horizon, I had a gang of geese drift
through my swim, pick up my line
and give me a screaming run on my
left hand rod. I was not happy! I
wound in, dropped the rod on the rod
rest and decided to wait until it got
properly light to redo it. The only
problem was I dozed off, and once I
went to put the rod out the sun was
right in line with where I was casting.
I had to wait until 7.30 before a cloud
went over the sun so I could recast to
my spot. First chuck it went down
with a thump so I left it at that.
At nine Steve Bull walked into my
swim to see how I was getting on. He
had come down to fish as we had prearranged but wasn’t going to miss
came in. It took half an hour to get my
line marker on my spool from where I
was fishing. And that was 80-plus
yards out! Then it gradually came in
so Steve donned his chest waders
and went to the edge of the reeds
armed with my net. Then I saw it
coming up through the surface glare
in the ripple; a big brown fish. In one
fell swoop Bully slipped the net round
her and I burst out laughing! What a
shock! I’d done it. Three nights in this
time, but hey, who’s counting?
On the 28th of May I had caught
Colin from the Shallow. In five nights’
fishing in the space of a month I had
caught the three biggest known mirrors in St Ives. Some decent anglers
go years hunting these fish and none
of them can be considered easy. On
the scales the normally massive
Round Brown showed 38lb – well
spawned out. It was almost a hat trick
of 40s but I really couldn’t care less.
I’m not bothered about its number
– it’s the fish I wanted and I now have
had her! Lucky, lucky me! www.denhambaits.co.uk n
England losing in a quarterfinal again
so came a day later! I told him I had
started to see a few fish show, and in
fact one had jumped right on my left
area a few moments ago. As we stood
there looking I put the kettle on to
make a brew. We watched another
couple roll but they were a long way
out. Then at half nine my left rod
whipped round and I got a few
bleeps. I picked the rod up, felt a kick
then it went solid in the weed. After a
few moments of stalemate, the fish
came out and almost straight rodded
me. I have never experienced a run
like it. The fish must have taken over
a hundred yards of line in one go. My
clutch was going as I was back winding! I had to let go of the reel handle,
as I couldn’t keep up – crazy!
Once right out into the lake the fish
again weeded me up. I was really
shaking – proper jelly legs. I was so
nervous as I knew I’d hooked a
good’un. As with the Pig I was convinced I knew what I had on the end.
After what seemed an age I got the
unseen fish moving and it slowly
