Lower Tamar has been fishing well recently, and we had this cracking
report from Tim Thornton… After some instant success on day ticket
venue, Melbury, in the form of a number of good carp to just under
20lbs, I decided to turn my attention again to one of the SW lakes
premier carp venues, Lower Tamar Lake. This is a beautiful venue,
scenic and outstanding in natural beauty. The trip coincided with two
lifelong friends Mark Golden and Julian Brindley coming down south
from the Midlands for an annual old friends’ reunion type social
fishing trip. I usually pick a venue that will impress my friends, allow
them to destress from their busy lives and hopefully give them the
opportunity to catch some lovely carp. This is the reason Lower Tamar
Lake was my first choice, as it’s as near a perfect carp water that you
can get in my opinion. It is a challenge at times, but get tactics right,
and the rewards for your efforts will come. On arrival, we opted for the
secluded long-walk swims. Tactics that were used were high visibility
pop-ups fished to baited clear patches in the weed. Baits consisted of
Mainline Cell, Rod Hutchinson KMG and particles. All in all we landed
11 carp including some lovely mid to high doubles with the best going
21lb 4oz. We had a great social session, and my friends are already
planning another trip.
