Made In England
his carp from the Thames. In the same
issue of Carp-Talk, and subsequent
ones, were photos of guys who actually have caught carp from the
Thames, and although they’re not the
size of the French fish they are stunning just the same. Starting at the
tidal end we have a stunning linear of
31lb caught by Steve Cresswell. This
came just a few feet from the bank
and from a spot that Steve regularly
baits, whether he’s fishing or not, so it
just goes to show that the tide
doesn’t always wash the bait away. A
little further upstream, at Kingston,
Dan Salter landed himself a new PB
common of 26lb. This came to a bit of
free thinking because not only was it
a PB but it was his first river carp.
He’d been cycling along and had seen
a carp milling around close in, so had
thrown in some pellets before going
home and preparing for an early
morning return. The next morning he
put in some more pellets and the fish
soon returned and within 20 minutes
of lowering his hookbait in he was
holding his prize. Finally, Luke Drew’s

incredibly scaled 32lb mirror was
caught near Windsor and fell to a freelined pop-up that he offered to a fish
he saw sucking at the surface scum.
Unsurprisingly, looking at the shape
of the fish, it gave him the fight of his
life and is, rightly so, a personal best.
This just goes to show what is available in our capital’s river, and also
goes to show that there really is no
need to lie.
As a final thought, with the
Olympics and Paralympics in mind,
how do you reckon they’re going to
sort out Sport’s Personality of the Year
this year? Gonna be a bit tricky, isn’t
it, but as an outside bet I’d go for
Boris. I thought he was brilliant
throughout and his speech at the end
of the parade through London was
just genius. The thing is, when David
Cameron gets up and congratulates
everybody you know it’s coming from
a sheet of paper. With Boris, and Seb
Coe for that matter, you know it’s
coming from the heart – bloody well
done to all of them, and God Save the
Queen. n
