2012 Quest For A Forty
man syndicate was set up in 2011.
The lake had been re-pegged to 15
well spaced out swims and a set of
sensible rules were now in place to
improve the fishery. Whilst this lake
was still a tricky proposition with
approximately 50 carp in 15 acres, my
aim was to try and fish about 30
nights (my annual limit) between
April and the end of October during
the week when the lake was less
busy.
My first trip was mid-April and
most of the lake’s occupants had
already been caught on zigs, with fish
still in the upper layers, and the average depths were in the region of 9ft. A
number of anglers had reaped the
rewards as the fish were caught off
guard and hungry for small bits of
black foam. From viewing the catch
log I was able, for the first time, to fully
appreciate the quality of the fish
stock in this lake, with two 40s and a
handful of upper 30s already listed
and about 50% of the fish caught
being over the 30lb bracket.
With an uneventful first trip being
cut short by a minor family emergency, I returned the following week
and promptly positioned myself on
the end of a fresh southerly wind.
With low pressure and a new wind, I
