Wilde
Thing
If you’ve always liked the world of Oscar Wilde but just
thought it could be a bit gayer, good news — his novel The
Picture of Dorian Gray has been turned into a musical,
which will open in London this July!
As well as being accompanied by new songs written
by Joe Evans, the gothic tale of eternal youth has been
modernised slightly, with Dorian (to be played by Alfie
Friedman) turned into a wannabe rockstar who strikes a
dangerous bargain to achieve success. However, does
this come at the cost of selling his soul?
Although the plot will be faithful to the original, director
Linnie Reedman promises this ambitious reinterpretation
will be darker and more explicitly queer than was
permitted in Wilde’s era. Tickets are available from
southwarkplayhouse.co.uk.
