Year of Engineering
Did you know that 2018 has been
designated the “Year of Engineering”?
This government-sponsored initiative was
created to highlight engineering as a career
choice to young people and to encourage
them to get involved in practical projects.
Remap’s work with disabled people is a
unique application of engineering thinking
and practical skills, solving real world
problems that face people with various
impairments. We’ve run a number of
sessions with young people during the year
and we have posed the sort of challenges
we get asked to solve here at Remap. We
have been impressed at the creative ideas
they came up with! In the picture we see
students of a school in Bolton trying to solve
the challenge posed by a stroke survivor how to peg up washing with one hand.
The Big Life Fix
This year we have been working with a
BBC 2 programme called the Big Life Fix.
The show follows leading inventors as they
create solutions to everyday problems posed
by disabled people; in other words doing
what we’ve been doing at Remap for over
50 years! We helped the programme makers
develop the series and provide ongoing
support to the people featured in the shows.
You can still see the programmes on BBC
iPlayer - search for the Big Life Fix.
