BEST-SELLING RPG SERIES
The first pair of Pokémon
games, Red and Green (inset
below), were an immediate
smash hit for Nintendo
when they came out in Feb
1996. Since then, seven
further generations of
Pokémon RPGs (role-playing
games) have been made,
comprising 37 individual titles.
As of Mar 2021, Pokémon
had sold 380 million games
and spawned 25 feature

MOBILE GAME ON DEBUT
Released on 6 Jul 2016, Pokémon
Go is an augmented-reality
game that spawns virtual
Poké-monsters in the real world
around us. By the end of its first
month, 130 million people had
put the game on their phones.
MOST CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED
Beginning with 1986’s groundbreaking The Legend of Zelda,
new entries in Nintendo’s
Zelda series have always
been a big deal. However, it
was the first 3D instalment of
the series, Ocarina of Time –
released on 21 Nov 1998 – that
earned Link’s adventures the
top spot among the all-time
greats. As of 22 Oct 2021,
Ocarina of Time had a score
of 99 out of 100 on reviewaggregator Metacritic, making
it the all-time most critically
acclaimed videogame; four
games currently sit behind it,
each with a Metascore of 98.

LARGEST COLLECTION OF ZELDA MEMORABILIA
Like every entry on this list, the Zelda series has its
share of superfans. Anne Martha Harnes (NOR) has
been hooked since 1994, when she first played A Link
to the Past on the SNES. In 2008, she started gathering
Zelda merchandise and, at the last count, had collected
1,816 unique items.
MOST CONCURRENTLY PLAYED
MOST FOLLOWED TWITCH STREAMER (FEMALE)
Fortnite’s popularity with streamers is a key
factor in its global success. One of the biggest
of these online personalities is Pokimane, aka
Imane Anys (CAN, b. MAR), who had 7,230,762
followers on Twitch as of 8 Feb 2021.
Despite being the youngest
game on this list, Fortnite
Battle Royale (2017) has
achieved a level of popularity
rivalled only by the game at
the number one spot. About
80 million players check
in for a round or two every
month, and there are typically
c. 4 million players active on
any given day. For special live
events, these figures rise even
higher. On 1 Dec 2020, the
Galactus Event – the climax of
a three-month collaboration
with Marvel – saw 15.3 million
players wage war against The
Devourer of Worlds.
