Window on Weaving; Exhibition at Haslemere Museum
The British Tapestry Groups South East and London present an exhibition of new woven
tapestry works at the Haslemere Museum from May 8th to 29th May 2021. Over 50 works
by 30 artist weavers in “Window on Weaving” illustrate how contemporary tapestry draws
on traditional techniques and develops these to bring in new ways of weaving.
All tapestries have been designed and woven by the artist weavers. The range of subjects,
figurative to abstract, allied with the very individualist approaches to the weaving methods
will make this an exciting and absorbing visit. Most works are for sale, plus small tapestries
for sale at under £50. There will be weaving demonstrations and yarns and weaving equipment for sale.
Haslemere Rotary Family Scarecrow Competition
The Rotary Club of Haslemere are sponsoring the very first annual Haslemere Scarecrow
competition. This competition will have two categories. The first is for schoolchildren (which
is being promoted directly through all the local schools) and the second is the Family
Scarecrow Competition.
This Competition will run during the two weeks of the
Haslemere Arts Festival, from May 14th to May 30th and
we will be asking you to display your scarecrows in your
front gardens throughout the duration of the Festival. You
have free license to design your own scarecrow, but what
we will be looking for when they are judged is their ability
to bring a smile to everyone’s faces.
The judging will take place over the weekend of Saturday
May 22nd and Sunday May 23rd and the twelve finalists
will be asked to bring their scarecrows to Lion Green on
Sunday May 30th where the final judging will take place alongside the schoolchildren’s
scarecrows by the well-known children’s author Julia Donaldson and Michael MoreMolyneux the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey. Prizes will be awarded for those scarecrows placed
first, second and third.
Pact Coffee (who have a roastery in Kings Road Haslemere) will be supplying the
hessian sacks, which will form the basis of the scarecrows) and Prestwick Farm is kindly
donating the straw. For each scarecrow, you will be given three hessian sacks and the
appropriate amount of straw. As a basis for the Scarecrow, one sack can be used for the
body and the other two sacks cut in half to form the two arms and legs, but we would
leave it to your discretion and imagination to make the head and of course dress it.
If you would like to take part in this competition, we would ask you to register at the
Rotary web-site https://www.rotary-ribi.org/clubs/homepage.php?ClubID=1454 You
will be asked to donate £5 for the materials which will go to Rotary Charities. Your
materials will be available to pick up from the car park at Haslewey on Sat May 1st and
Sun May 2nd, Sat Mat 8th and Sun May 9th, from 10am to 3pm. Thank you for taking
part and we are looking forward to meeting you and your scarecrows.
