Remote Onboarding
Typical onboarding processes can be lengthy once you’ve set up a new user on the network, created a new
workspace, requested equipment and provided them with orientation, best practice and found space in everyone’s
diary for them to meet the new recruit...
Some of these processes are quite different for remote onboarding, but there’s an opportunity here to streamline
them overall. Focus on the goal of helping everyone to feel settled quickly rather than disseminating the largest
amount of information in the shortest amount of time.
If they are taking on an existing role, however, over prepare by creating detailed step by step guidance on how
each task is usually performed. It will be much harder for the new person to ask simple questions such as where
files are located in shared folders, for instance.
Provide each new recruit with items that they can read while waiting for responses, or if they have some
downtime. Compile articles about your company, relevant websites, stakeholder information, competitor
information, and let them create a list of questions for the whole team to answer.
Check in with them more regularly than you would with a colleague working in the same location, and ensure that
they have face to face time with each member of their new team. Choose a mentor wisely - a senior member of
staff may not always be the best choice. Assigning a mentor in a similar role at the same level, or with similar
responsibilities, can help new starters acclimatise and provide a much needed sounding board that they feel more
comfortable to use.
