Communication
And Relationship Building
Team working might be a big challenge for remote workers, but there are always ways to build relationships. It’s
likely that most teams will contain a mixture of office based, hybrid and remote workers, so you’ll need to think
creatively about how to instill a sense of mutual support and camaraderie.
Regularly schedule non work related chats so that employees can get to know each other as people with unique
skills, not just as the person who looks after this area, or who has replaced someone else.
Choose collaboration software wisely: the minimum you need is group video calling, messaging, screen sharing, the
ability to record the meeting, email integration and file sharing. Ensure that it works on all platforms and is easy to
use.
Always send an agenda for video calls in advance, and always follow up with clear action points. Technical glitches
and volume issues will sometimes occur, leaving participants unclear on what was agreed. Planning for technology
to fail is rarely a useless exercise, even if only one person’s connection goes down mid-meeting.
Some in person face to face time,
however infrequent, will always move
relationships forward. Socially
distanced days in the office should be
used wisely, maybe for informal ideas
sessions or even just for fun activities.
Where possible, stagger start and
finish times on these days for remote
staff who may be nervous about using
public transport at peak times.
