Benefit Packages
Another challenge for businesses will be pay and benefits for workers who are required to work from the office
compared to those working at home.
Over time it should be possible to address these inequities from the outset with pay and benefits packages
designed with these differences in mind.
Consider cafeteria style schemes and allow
employees to select those that fit their
circumstances. Office based workers will have
much higher costs related to transport and
personal expenses. They might also pay higher
child care premiums, or might no longer need to

use these services at all. Remote workers will face
higher utility bills and might have to purchase
better broadband and technology in order to work
efficiently from home. Hybrid workers will face
both sets of costs.
Remote and hybrid staff may need to pay higher home insurance premiums now that they are using their home as
a place of work; many staff find cycle to work schemes help to offset the initial cost of purchasing a bike and life
insurance is understandably becoming a concern for many families. Travel benefits will be on a downward trend for
some time until this industry recovers.
Over time, it may be sensible to start including a transport cost weighting for office based roles, and an equipment
and utility subsidy for home based employees. Respond to future restrictions and opportunities by adjusting the
support you offer via staff benefits. If you can make their lives easier, employees will be free to work to their fullest
potential.
