Hybrid Working
Employees who are unable to work from home exclusively may be suited to hybrid working. This entails working
from the office or other location on tasks that can’t be easily completed at home. It could include the need to work
with specialist equipment, sensitive information, where there is a requirement to meet clients or customers face to
face or because the piece of work must be completed in a controlled environment.
Of course, for many reasons, some workers who could work remotely all of the time, may prefer a hybrid working
arrangement. They may feel that the office provides a sanctuary from a noisy home environment, or maybe they
like the routine and formality of an office to aid concentration. If possible, consider these requests when not in a
restricted period and make sure all employees know when office working is possible and how to book a space to
work.
Ensure that all employees, regardless of their working arrangements, are clear on office protocols. They will need
to understand one way systems for moving around the office, where hand sanitisers are located, how to manage
visitors, and how they can access additional protections such as face masks and screens if they require them.
Health and safety assessment for hybrid workers should be carried out in the office and at home, with employees
having access to the same equipment in both places as far as possible. Provide employees with the knowledge to
carry out their own assessments and encourage them to do this on a regular basis before problems arise.
Second wave contingency will, of course, need to
plan for hybrid workers to be homebased at all times.
Also consider how the office based responsibilities of
fully office based or hybrid workers that need to
shield or quarantine might be covered at any given
time, by including this in your plan for a contingent
workforce. Let your recruiter know about any
possible gaps well in advance, so they can keep a list
of candidates who might be able to fill in at short
notice.
