WELCOME TO
HOMOTOPIA FESTIVAL 2020:
COVID-19:
Find out how
we’re protecting
our audiences
on page 37
When you tackle a Maths problem at school, the grade depends not
so much on finding the correct solution, but on how you got there.
In the answer box sits the statement: show your working.
Last year, we urged the Homotopia audience to ‘Resist! Resist!’, a
fighting theme bringing folks to action. Heeding the call, I’ve attended
(socially distanced) protests in recent months; emphatically declaring
that Black Lives Matter, and calling for protection of Transgender Rights
and a demand for the reformation of the Gender Recognition Act (GRA).
To show your working is to suggest that you may not have the answer
but you are making a plan for how to get there.
Let’s consider how we, as an organisation, as an LGBTQIA community
and as queer individuals, have contributed towards the ongoing
oppression of our QTBIPoC and Trans siblings. It isn’t just ‘show your
working’, but also ‘show you’re working’. We need to be better allies
to each other. We must do the work; to interrogate our prejudices, to
understand our histories and to show up for one another. Not as a one
off, but as an intentional statement about the way we aim to change and
grow. Will you join us on this journey?
Planning this year’s festival has certainly been tricky but everyone at
Homotopia feels we owe it to our community and our audience to be
here, to bring the art, the culture and the party. Whether at socially
distanced events or in the comfort of your own home via our livestreams.
Enjoy x
