Painting on location outside ‘en plein air’ affords a kind of spatial freedom to even a
small painting. Locations include: The South Downs panoramas, Sussex woodlands,
Hampshire New Forest, Tuscan mountains, the South of France - Avignon and Arles. I
am presently painting in the Arun Valley’s protected waterways. I often revisit the
sites with paintings large and small to accumulate further surfaces, rhythms and
abstractions, which are layered successively over a number of days, recording
changes in real time. The rationale is capturing a transience in life and our
connection with nature.
In the studio, further stages of creation and destruction occur, leading to new
surfaces, partially formed from memory of the live locations and partially from the
use of subsequent studio discoveries. When I develop paintings in this way, many
elements of the original on-site marks are partially buried but are left visible enough
such that they can be visually excavated.
