Artist: John Bartlett
From the onset Bartlett has been preoccupied with creating narrative paintings for
a contemporary audience, producing works that oscillate between representation
They have ranged from history painting of the everyday to more allegorical visions
fused with darker visions and more meditative tones.
Parallel to this has been an ongoing recording of interiors; rooms & spaces created
from observation, memory & imagination - the poetry of the everyday.
Seemingly empty rooms are haunted by traces of human presence and previous
activity although most recently figures have started to emerge more clearly out of
the shadows/paint surface. Imaginary friends and gatherings have started to appear
- half forgotten, half remembered.
