Artist: Craig Jefferson
Craig Jefferson’s work is about viewing beyond the surface. It is about digging deeply
into the nature of reality. He aims to do this by allowing careful observation of
physical objects to inform an imaginative response to the relationships he sees. For
Craig, the process of making the work is as important, if not more important, than
the final pieces themselves.
Craig’s work is expressive in the use of materials and colour. His paintings and
drawings are characterised by heavily worked surfaces with materials being applied
and removed in a rigorous fashion as he searches to describe the sensation of the
things he sees. Craig is strongly influenced by the abstract expressionists and by
colourists such as Bonnard and Soutine, artists who had an instinctive response and
deep connection with reality.
