David Drey studied painting, in the life-room, at the Byam Shaw School of Art (19871990).
There followed residencies at The Florence Trust (1992-93) and the Digswell Arts
Trust (1994-98), then many years working in various London studios until his move
to Hastings in 2010.
He works almost exclusively with oil paint on canvas dealing with the complexities of
figures, spaces and environments; a mixture of perception from life and an
imaginative elaboration of that experience prompted by what happens with oil paint,
its textures and colours, moment to moment. Again and again, theory and planning
go out the window surrendering to that moment of intensity when the image
These mono-prints, come paintings, on paper form part of a larger series of works
that developed from a series of abstract paintings he had just completed. By drawing
with line on the back of a piece of cartridge paper laid on oil paint he was able to
combine both painting and drawing in a way that released images very quickly. As
with all his work, the imagery is an imaginative response to his everyday
