What do I need to know before taking this course?
To study Classical Civilisation at A Level, a good History and/or English GCSE grade is vital. An interest in
Ancient History and a willingness to read and critically analyse material is also important. Independent
learning, an appreciation for the value of learning and a desire to engage in classroom discussion are also
necessary to enjoy the course to its full potential.
What will I learn on this course?
Classical Civilisation will provide you with a broad, coherent and rewarding introduction to the classical
world. It offers you the unique opportunity to study the literature, visual and material culture and
thought of the classical world. As well as acquire an understanding of the social, historical and cultural
context.
What kind of student is this course suitable for?
The course is suitable for any student with a desire to delve deeper into different areas of History. You
should have an interest in the ancient world that you wish to expand on or be eager to discover the classical
world for the first time. As a student of Classical Civilisation, you will have the opportunity to develop your
analytical skills verbally, in the form of discussion and debate, and in your written work.
What kind of work will I need to do outside lessons?
The assignments in Classical Civilisation will vary in nature, but will include:
Reading original texts; research; written analysis; presentations; preparation for debates.
It is essential to read and research beyond the set texts of the course to gain a broader and better
understanding of the literature and material culture studied. This could include popular literature,
historically accurate fiction or television documentaries.
What could I go on to do at the end of my course?
Classical Civilisation is the only subject at A Level that allows students to discover and engage with
content from the classical world. The course is highly academic but nurtures key skills that are crucial to
higher education and offers an exciting opportunity to delve into Ancient History not available to all
students. Classical Civilisation provides a strong supporting option alongside English Literature and
History as possible options for higher education as well as offering a taster for popular university courses
such as: Archaeology, Classics, Ancient History and Art History.
