A Level
Grade 6 at GCSE in Design & Technology
Mr T Crutchley
What do I need to know or be able to do before taking this course?
A Level of competence in Design & Technology to at least GCSE grade 6 is essential or equivalent. The actual
course of study you followed at GCSE is largely unimportant, but for this course, knowledge of wood, plastics
and metals would be of benefit. It is also very important to be able to produce and deliver high quality
presentations.
What will I learn on this course?
This course will enable you to:
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of technological processes and systems
Analyse design situations and identify problems solving solutions
Propose innovative ideas through a variety of creative media
Design, make, test, evaluate and modify solutions and prototypes
Demonstrate a sound knowledge of production technologies and provide a sound basis for further
study in Design and Technology
What kind of student is this course suitable for?
This course will appeal to students who:
Enjoyed Design & Technology at GCSE
Have an interest in how products are manufactured
Like to demonstrate their creativity
Wish to work with design software
What kind of work will I need to do outside lessons?
Although a reasonable amount of class work will be dedicated to the production of personal study folders
and project work, you will need to work individually, on theory work. You are also expected to find and read
articles or books related to the subject to advance your understanding and depth of knowledge. Visits may
be arranged to help you appreciate potential areas for study and to highlight actions that are taken to
address relevant problems in the modern world.
What could I go on to do at the end of my course?
As well as students interested in a career associated with design, the course is particularly useful as a means
of demonstrating the ability to think creatively and originally in response to problems. As such it could be
an excellent precursor to any creative course in higher education, or any job demanding excellent skills in,
planning, problem solving, communication and the ability to think in an original way.
