What is the course content and how is it assessed?
A Level content:
For the A Level, students will study all of the following topics:
Individuals, firms, markets and market failure:
Economic methodology and the economic problem
Individual economic decision making
Price determination in a competitive market
Production, costs and revenue
Perfect competition, imperfectly competitive markets and monopoly
The Labour Market
The distribution of income and wealth: Poverty and monopoly
The labour market
The distribution of income and wealth: poverty and inequality
The market mechanism, market failure and government intervention in markets
The national and international economy
The measurement of macroeconomic performance
How the macro economy works: the circular flow of income, AD/AS analysis and related concepts
Economic performance
Financial markets and monetary policy
Fiscal policy and supply-side policy
The international economy
A Level assessment: The A Level has three, two hour written exams.
Paper 1: Markets and market failure: students answer two questions:
Section A – students choose one context from a choice of two
Section B – students choose one context from a choice of three
Paper 2: National and international economy: students answer questions:
Section A – students choose one context from a choice of two
Section B - students choose one context from a choice of three
Paper 3: Economic principles and issues:
Section A- multiple choice
Section B – extended writing questions
The A Level specification will assess students’ quantitative skills applied in the context of economics. This
will include an understanding and application of ratios, fractions, percentages, revenue and profit and other
factors, tested across the assessment objectives. At A Level this forms a minimum 20% of the assessment.
