What do I need to know or be able to do before taking this course?
There are no specific requirements for the Law course, however it will help if you enjoy debating and
keeping up to date with current affairs. It will prove useful if you have a logical mind capable of analysing
and solving case studies. You must be prepared to have an articulate and critical approach to a variety of
issues as you will be expected to read and interpret legislation and detailed trial judgments. You may also
enjoy participating in a ‘mock trial’.
What will I learn on this course?
You will learn:
Criminal law, Offences Against the Person, the law of tort and sentencing
About the structure of the legal system and legal institutions in England, how law is made and enforced
To understand how disputes are resolved ranging from the courts through to tribunals and negotiation
To apply your knowledge of law to given factual situations
To solve legal problems using Tort, Contract and Criminal Law
All this will assist you in developing the fundamental legal skill of thinking critically, analytically and precisely.
This will then allow you to express yourself accurately and logically in written assignments where you are
asked to apply your knowledge of law to scenarios and reach an informed and reasoned conclusion.
What kind of student is this course suitable for?
This course is NOT exclusive to those students who want to go on to study Law at University and become
solicitors or advocates. Law is a subject which is extremely versatile and well suited to the field of politics,
banking, finance and accountancy. This course is exclusive to those students who are: motivated,
hardworking and committed. You must be willing to develop new skills, have an enquiring mind and have
the ability to think and write critically. Subjects which compliment Law at A Level are: History, Government
and Politics, Sociology, Economics and Modern Foreign Languages.
What kind of work will I need to do outside lessons?
You will need to read cases and their judgments and carry out research into various legal principles to further
your understanding. You will need to complete the homework assignments set weekly, which are designed
to assist your learning and show you can evaluate case studies legally and compose a critical legal response,
within the set deadlines. You will need to be organised and prepared to review your notes regularly in order
to keep up with the pace of the course. You may also participate in ‘mock trials’.
