The essential guide to Nashville
Tennessee’s Music City has earned its name. This hotbed of music,
history and culture is an essential stop on any tour of the south and it’s
not a city to hurry through – it’s huge and has a lot to offer. Millions of
visitors turn up each year to enjoy what Nashville has to offer. Start off
with your visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, where
you can check out the plaques dedicated to the biggest stars in this
genre. The Johnny Cash Museum pays homage to the famous Man in
Black, including an incredible collection of costumes during his musical
career. The Ryman Auditorium is the heart and soul of Nashville’s
musical heritage and brings visitors face to face with historical dressing
rooms, rare photographs and other artifacts. Round up your musical
tour of Nashville at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge, the downtown bar that
features well-known and lesser-known artists.
But while music clearly runs through the veins of this city, Nashville is
also extremely proud of its history. Nashville’s Parthenon – an exact
dimensional replica of the ancient Greek temple - was built for the
Centennial Exposition in 1897, has become an iconic attraction and has
earned the city the nickname as the “Athens of the South”. The Belle
Meade Plantation, “Queen of the Tennessee Plantations”, was built in
1887 and features a magnificent mansion museum.
End your visit with a visit to the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge, for
some of the most dramatic views of Nashville’s skyline and the
Cumberland River on which it sits. It’s a city of distinct neighbourhoods,
so for incredible eating and drinking head to Germantown; cruise
around 12 South for shopping adventures; hit East Nashville for a
locals’ experience; the Gulch is the place for records, guitars and gigs;
and spend time Downtown for honky tonks, museums, bars and some
ace southern barbecue!
