Celebrang where you live!
Each quarterly magazine, we are going to be
focusing on each of the wards in Peterlee to let
you know what’s been happening where you live
and to celebrate some of the amazing people
who help in and around your community.
This edion, we are focusing on Dene House!
For those who don’t know, the ward of Dene
House is in the east of Peterlee and runs from the
edge of Castle Eden Dene to Kirkstone Avenue and
from the border with Horden to Peterlee Town
Centre.
Within the ward, Peterlee Town Council owns the
newly refurbished park at Heath Close, o Fulwell
Road. Heath Close Park had its ocial opening just
before the naonal lockdown began in March. On
its opening day, many people from the local
community came to see the results of their input
into the community consultaon. The park was
fully redesigned with new play equipment, fencing
and an added mul-sports arena. Residents also
enjoyed face painng, gi bags and a healthy
lunch as part of the celebraons.
Peterlee Town Council also owns the allotment
site o Thorntree Gill. This year nally saw the
compleon of an amenity building on the site, for
the use of allotment holders and local community
groups, once things start geng back to normal.
The new building, the Councils rst greener
project, has solar panels to provide all visitors
with electricity and hot water. Funding provided

developers of the new retail park, also allowed
the Town Council to purchase water bus to
collect rainwater which will be used by the
gardeners and the new community garden there.
The ward is home to two schools – Dene House
Primary School and Dene Academy. During his
term, the Mayor, Councillor Terry Duy, has had
the pleasure of aending Dene Academy to take
part in the Mayor’s Award Ceremony and to assist
with their school garden by giving them sunower
plants to nurture and grow. Councillor Duy also
aended Dene House Primary School to drop o
treats for sta and pupils and to deliver Mayor’s
Awards to children that really look aer their
neighbourhood.
During lockdown, Dene House Maers, a
community Facebook page, held a Scarecrow
compeon. The Scarecrows made by the Dene
House Ward families were displayed in front
gardens for all to see and all parcipang children
were awarded with Easter Eggs. Councillor Terry
Duy had this to say: “As the pictures show, the
entries were amazing, and the sense of fun and
achievement was great. Children of key workers at
Dene House Primary School and residents of
Bannatyne Lodge also joined in the fun and made
their own scarecrows, which helped to make the
event a great success.”
In May, Dene House residents came together to
celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE day, with
socially distanced street pares and an amazing
array of decoraons and bunng.
Councillor Terry Duy gave almost 70 young
sunower plants to local residents and children
giving them the opportunity to look aer and
grow beauful sunowers of their own. The
results were huge with one plant growing to over
13 feet. Well done to everyone that took part.
Residents in the Ha ield Place area made and
displayed birthday cards and banners for two
young girls to walk around and see, aer both of
their birthday celebraons were cancelled. It’s
kind and caring gestures like these that prove that
somemes, it’s the simple acts of kindness that
make such a dierence to the place we live.
