Age UK County Durham
At Age UK County Durham we are all
working hard to support older people living
in the county during Covid19. This is a
dicult me for many people, but those
who are more elderly face a parcular set
of challenges, from the need to shield, to
anxiees about the impact of Covid19 in
their communies, to increased loneliness
as a result of not being able to see their
families and friends, or to enjoy social
acvies.
‘I am so proud of both of them (clients),
even though I’ve never met them I have a
mental image of what I think they are like,
they both have amazing resilience and never
complain, just get on with things as they
are’ (telephone befriender)
Case study from one of our shoppers
Fiercely independent, this couple in their
eighes from the Sherburn Hill area are selfisolang to keep themselves safe and well.
This means they then needed help and
support with their shopping etc. They were
inially apprehensive about accepng help
but they knew they needed to in order to be
able to stay at home during the Covid-19
situaon.
We were soon able to match them up with a
volunteer to help them, whilst nervous at
rst they have since developed a fantasc
rapport with the volunteer who has been
helping them, they told her ‘Age UK County
Durham is a brilliant service, we could not
have managed without you. Your help is
very much appreciated’
It is stories like this that keep us and our
volunteers going. Just knowing that we are
making a dierence to the lives of others by
acts of kindness and the giving of me
shows us that community spirit is very much
alive and kicking and the desire to help
others less fortunate than themselves is
inslled in the many, not the few.
We are currently focusing our services on:
• Help with shopping collecon and
delivery
• Prescripon collecon and delivery
• Befriending calls
How can you help?
our capacity and meet the needs of
vulnerable older people in this area. You
will receive the full support of our team
whilst you are volunteering as we recognise
the value of your commitment and support
upon older people in our communies.

We currently have about 150 volunteers
who are giving a few hours a week to
support an older person with shopping or
befriending across the county. We would
like to recruit a few volunteers in the
Seaham and East Durham areas to increase
