The Ghost of John Street
Legend has it the ghost of an elderly woman once
haunted John Street, a narrow street of houses
demolished to make way for Royal Avenue.
In the locale of what’s now Central Library,
in 1882, the gruesome discovery of a female
skeleton was made by workmen in the yard of
one of the old houses. Stories of the ghost of an
elderly lady who threw items around a house, and
was seen by former residents pacing the yard,
had persisted for many years.
