I
n common with many other
sporting activities, our bowling
club has closed its doors until
at least June 30th. The situation
will then be reviewed to see if
restrictions have been sufficiently
lifted in order to play some games.
Although the fixture list against
other clubs – for the first half of
the season at least – has been
cancelled, it is hoped that it might
be possible to play again, even if
only amongst club members, later
in the summer.
The finances of the club depend largely on income
from membership fees, bar takings, match fees
and sponsorship – the last three of which will not
return anything for the foreseeable future. The
green still needs to be maintained or it would be
unusable when play is allowed to recommence.
Some operations are technical and have to
be carried out by a specialist contractor. It is
important to say that only the minimum amount
of work specified by the sport’s national body
is taking place and grounds maintenance was
classified as essential work when the lockdown
was introduced.
Through the remarkable generosity of club
members, who have maintained their membership,
irrespective of the prospect of playing any games,
the club can afford to keep its head above water. We
are very grateful for everyone who has contributed
and displayed their loyalty in this way.
As already said, the bowling green still needs to be
maintained and the premises kept up to scratch.
A small team of volunteers have been cutting
the green and carrying out routine maintenance,
again
for
which we are
grateful. Social
distancing has
been observed
at all times.
Only essential
work has been
carried out and
attention to the
green kept to an absolute minimum. The irony is
that, with nobody playing on the green, it looks in
its best condition for many years! The photograph
proves the point.
As with everyone, we hope that the pandemic
subsides and some sports can be allowed in the
near future. Any developments in that direction
will be publicised on the news page of the club’s
website, www.threemilecrossbowlingclub.co.uk,
so that anyone interested, especially those who
missed our Open Days, can be kept up-to-date.
