EDITOR’S LETTER
W
elcome to our summer bumper triple
issue for June, July & August! It will, of
course, be a rather different magazine
compared to our usual summer issues that feature
upcoming events such as fetes. However, this issue
is packed with plenty of local news and fun things
to do during lockdown. There is something for
everyone of all ages and interests in our articles.
Bear in mind that there’s also further information
and activities from the links included in the articles.
One of the advantages of a digital issue is that the
links are clickable – meaning that you can access upto-date information throughout the three months
that this issue covers. We hope to be able to produce
a printed magazine again for the upcoming autumn
or winter issues, depending on when/how lockdown
is eased. We would not want to ask our volunteer
deliverers to go out again before it is safe to do so.
Even when we do return to printed magazines, we
will continue to produce a digital version too, as
that has been such a success. Many thanks to the
wonderful Joan Woodroffe who edited our first
digital-only issue last month, while I was on holiday.
Obviously my ‘holiday’ was very much an at-home
break, but I really enjoyed the quality time with my
family. We had fun doing more things at home for
ourselves than we would have done pre-lockdown.
We baked bread and, as you can see from my
updated photo, even gave each other haircuts!
We recognise that these are difficult times for small
businesses. We are glad that our magazine provides
them with a platform to reach the customers most
local to them and we are thankful that they continue
to advertise with us. This community magazine is
funded purely from the revenue from our advertisers
and sponsors – we do not draw upon church funds
at all. So, readers, do peruse our adverts to see if
there is anything of interest to you and do let any
companies you contact know that you found out
about them from Loddon Reach magazine. During
lockdown, I have been so grateful to be able to
make use of local companies, for example, ordering
a meat delivery from a local butcher when we
couldn’t get a supermarket delivery. Not only was I
helping to support a local
business, but the variety of
meats made a nice change
from the same old things
I always get from the
supermarket.
We would also like to say
a huge thank you to our main
sponsor for this issue, Shinfield Parish Council.
Our cover shows some of the 13,500 daffodils
that they have planted throughout Shinfield,
Ryeish Green, Spencers Wood, Three Mile Cross &
Grazeley. Pages 8-11 feature a range of interesting
news from Shinfield Parish Council.
If you haven’t already done so, please do subscribe
to the digital version of Loddon Reach magazine. You
can do so on our website www.loddonreach.org.uk.
By subscribing, you will ensure that you get each
digital issue as soon as it comes out. Subscribing
is free and will not affect whether you receive a
printed copy once they resume. You will also be
helping the longevity of this community magazine,
because the higher the number of subscribers we
have, the more advertisers we can attract. (Rest
assured, we will only tell advertisers the total
number of subscribers – we will not share any of
your details. Also it’s easy to unsubscribe at a later
date if you choose.)
When reading the articles and looking at the
accompanying photos in this issue, I felt
uplifted by the heartening ways in
which those in our area are helping
each other, keeping in touch and
demonstrating such community spirit.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all
those affected by Covid19 and we give
thanks to all those key workers who
are keeping us safe.
