hen Tessa Costain and I met with Fred
Holloway on March 12th to discuss
the Russell Players’ participation in
his planning for the 75th commemoration of VE
day on May 8th, who could have predicted what
would happen next? We know now! All planning
shelved!
Chris and I then revisited the 50th commemoration
of VE day on May 8th 1995; it was performed by
the Russell Players in Swallowfield Parish Hall.
Having transferred the original tape to digital,
we extracted a couple of short clips to put up

The evening, in a soldout parish hall, consisted
of a 1940s style supper
followed by a show
lasting 1 ½ hours. In a hall
decorated with flags and
reproductions of wartime
posters from the Cabinet
War Rooms; with extracts
from Churchill’s speeches,
recordings of Spitfires,
Lancaster bombers, sirens,
the ‘all clear’ and singing
32 songs from those wartime years, under our
indefatigable Director of Music, Mary Sangster, 35
Russell Players representing our armed forces and
civilian organisations took part. It was a hugely
memorable evening and the foot-stamping, table
thumping encores demanded by our audience
were eventually skilfully
brought to an end by Mary
– she simply closed the
piano lid, exiting “stage
right”, waving graciously!
Interesting
facts:
In
compiling and arranging
the programme, I used
original music copies from
the 1940s – a graphic
reminder, by diminishing
size, that not only food
was rationed.
A table display of an adult’s weekly ration
allowance was a startling reminder of
