MORRIS DANCING
SAMARITANS THANKS ROTARIANS
W
T
hat an interesting summer for Morris
dancers! At the moment, like a lot of
things, everything is on hold until we can
go out again. We have already missed a St George’s
Day dinner at a golf club and the Wokingham May
Fayre. Not to mention our summer pub schedule
with other sides.
“Easthampstead Rotary Club has just
donated this generous sum, and we’d like
to applaud its wonderful continued support,”
said Chris Lindsay, director at Samaritans of
Bracknell, Wokingham, Ascot & Districts.
“This money is a great help, as it was with
disappointment that we had to cancel a key
fundraising event – a Wokingham Theatre
evening – owing to the covid-19 situation.
Our practice season had to finish early but we are
hoping we can get back to this in October. Please
look at our website www.Shinfieldshambles.com
if you want some information.
Samaritans is available round the clock,
every single day of the year. We provide a
safe place for anyone struggling to cope,
whoever they are, however they feel, whatever
life has done to them. Please call 116 123
(free to call) (UK) or email jo@samaritans.org.
Please note that the branch is currently
unable to provide face-to-face support. Visit
www.samaritans.org to find further details.
“Rotary members raise money not only for many
local charities but for important international
projects.”

The current situation makes it uncertain
whether a meeting will be possible on 15th July.

“We’d like to thank them and
publicise their support of
our service, which continues
to operate all round the
clock during this critical
period, when so many are
anxious and worried.”
Its volunteers continue to ensure the local
branch plays its part in the Governmentrecognised contribution that the Samaritans’
charity is making by offering emotional support
during the coronavirus pandemic.
May 1st was the beginning of the Morris season
and many sides usually dance at dawn. There have
been a lot of pictures on Facebook of lone Morris
dancers in their gardens or houses, still keeping up
the tradition. Also, there was a lone Morris festival
to celebrate St George’s Day and a lot of us sent in
videos to celebrate that as well. There were also
videos from the USA, Australia and New Zealand.
The calendar is still viable for later in the year – we
will have to see if we can fulfil it.

reetings to all our readers. Can I begin by
thanking Amanda and Joan for keeping
Loddon Reach magazine going through
such difficult times. The only footpath checking
I have been able to do is in my local area, so it
is very much on trust that the Shinfield parish
paths are holding up. I know that the Wokingham
Borough Council (WBC) countryside service
has been doing surface cutting in the east of
the borough but I’m not sure if the normal
schedule will have been carried out elsewhere.
The Loddon Valley Ramblers have been advised
of some issues outside of Shinfield and we
have been able to deal with those through our
footpath secretary and WBC.
Returning to the Shinfield paths, we have been
advised that the northern end of Footpath 11 has
now been hard sealed, so that’s good news for
the mums and dads when doing the school run.
Our good friend Ian deserves a pat on the back
for getting this path improved, over many years
of campaigning.
As mentioned in the last
edition, we will be repairing
the byway up at Riseley. WBC
has agreed we should do it
and have agreed to supply the
material. At the time of writing,
the ramblers are locked-down by headquarters so
the jobs are on hold. We will, of course, abide by all
instructions from headquarters and government.
That just leaves me to say – stay safe, keep well
and we will give you an update for the footpaths
in September.
Elaine, Kerry and I are contactable should you wish
to report any issues noticed on your daily walks
for exercise. Elaine can be contacted on 0118 988
2771 or sobek@memja.plus.com. Kerry can be
contacted on 0118 988 2250. I can be contacted
on ramblerray@gmail.com or 07761 251 217.
