GIRLGUIDING SHINFIELD DISTRICT
Review of the year
T
he year started off in September with
the usual traditions – new girls learning
their promise and forming new sixes and
patrols – with celebrations such as Halloween
and Bonfire Night being celebrated with apple
bobbing, doughnuts on a string, fancy dress
and toasting marshmallows while singing old
camp songs. Remembrance Sunday was bright
and breezy, and it wasn’t long before Christmas
sleepovers and the District Carol Service.
During the Autumn Term, the girls completed
their year-long fundraising campaign that started
at our 70th Anniversary and donated £2,500 to
Guide Dogs for the Blind. In truth, it had taken at
least 18 months to generate that amount, but it
was all for a good cause and the chance for the
girls to name their own puppy, who could then
be trained.
During the term, the girls completed a wide
variety of activities from Judo, Tae Kwando & rockclimbing to crafting, mindfulness and meditation,
plus a trip to make sausages at Lockey Farm.
Others focused on recycling and the impact of
plastic on the planet, while some got their green
fingers out and started planting seeds.
The Spring Term soon brought World Thinking
Day in February where, this year, we attended
‘All the World’s a Stage’ in Bracknell. It was a
great day, with a Performing Arts Theme, and
many of the girls in the District attended, taking
part in an exciting mix of dance, drama, music
and theatre workshops as well as craft activities.
Others attended the Regional Roadshow at Red
Kangaroo where the girls got to have an hour’s
free trampolining followed by cake afterwards,
while others got busy making pancakes for
Shrove Tuesday.
March brought our, now famous, annual trip to
PGL Liddington. After the first night of campfire

and songs, Saturday was filled with activities like
the giant swing, zip-wiring, crate stacking, and
survival skills. Some of the games got a bit more
creative when the weather meant we spent time
indoors, but this year was particularly special as it
would be the last trip before lockdown, providing
the girls with many fantastic memories. Only a
few weeks later, Girlguiding was suspended,
along with all the schools, and treats like our trip
to LEGOLAND for a sleepover at the end of March
– now deferred to autumn (hopefully).
Little did we know, we would be drafting our end
of year review at the start of May rather than in
July as usual. At this point, it is unlikely we will
recommence before the end of the Summer
Term, meaning a number of fun activities will
need to be put on hold until the autumn but we
continue to monitor the situation.
It’s not all bad news though. Spencers Wood
Rainbows was successful in receiving a
Community Award from Taylor Wimpy after
being nominated by local residents – a very
proud moment. We also have one or two new
leaders that have joined us this year, while others
have achieved long service awards ranging from
5 years to 30 years, and a very special award for
